Palm Oil, it’s in so many of the foods we eat and products we use on a daily basis. Most of us don’t think about the big picture effect it can leave on wildlife. Sumatran Tigers, Sumatran and Bornean Orangutans, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran Rhinos, and Malayan Sun Bears are just a few who are affected negatively.
This short documentary by Journeyman.tv below details how the demand for Palm Oil has endangered the Sumatran Elephant. Palm oil prices are plummeting and so is the wildlife that surrounds it as they are driven out of their habitat to support this industry. An article in Elephant Family states Mandatory labeling of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) will help make a positive difference. It’s mind blowing that 10% of the global palm oil supply is certified sustainable, however, LESS than half of the available CSPO has been purchased during the past year.
